Eco-Flooring Choices

The term “environmentally friendly” has two meanings in reference to a home.  The first meaning has to do with having products in your home which are harmful to your health and the second is doing our part to save what is left of our planet.  Both of these effects should be considered when choosing flooring as it takes up so much physical space in your home.  There are plenty of alternative products available that are environmentally friendly without having to sacrifice design, comfort, or an extra cost.

Carpet

Environmentally-friendly carpet seems like a cliché as carpet traps dirt, dust and other allergens and the synthetic fibres can have gas emissions.  GREEN-Choice carpet is manufactured using recycled nylon and contains a BioFresh anti-microbial protection against the growth of bacterial mold and mildew.  This carpet is the perfect choice for people who are sensitive to air quality as it is certified to the Carpet & Rug Institute’s highest indoor quality rating.

Wool is a natural fibre and is continually in abundance. Although it is a natural fibre, wool may have other issues, such as the condition of the sheep farms or the wool fibre factories. Wool is soft and is easy to keep clean as dirt and liquid spills are repelled, keeping your carpet looking new and giving you the option to keep your carpet longer which benefits the environment even more.

Cork

Corkfloor is luxuriously soft, comfortable and is a great alternative to the hard feel of ceramic tile. Corkis available in a number of colour choices and is a unique style of flooring.

It is made from the bark of a cork tree and these trees have the capability to re-grow the bark back.  It is hypoallergenic and one of the most environmentally-friendly styles of flooring. Corkis fifty percent air and is quiet, soft and warm to touch. Corkis durable enough for all kinds of traffic such as children and pets.  It is impact resistant and is a natural insulator against heat, cold, and noise.

Protection against direct sunlight and UV light is important to minimize the fading of the floor. Cork is easy to clean and care for as it resists scuffs and stains and the textured pattern disguises dust.  It has a textured surface and no two floor planks are alike.  Some colour and shade variation is present but this natural, random appearance creates an elegant look.

Hardwood

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is the only forest certification system qualifying under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building rating system.  FSC is an independent industry with inspectors hired to evaluate a timber firm’s commercial forests.  These inspectors verify that the forest’s natural biodiversity is being maintained and that either the same amount or fewer trees are being harvested than removed and that the forest is naturally self-sustaining.  The inspection process begins with the cutting and processing stages ensuring the employees work under safe, humane and fair-trade conditions and continues through as far as possible to the end user.

Bamboo

Bamboo is the fastest growing plant in the world and, although it is not a tree, it has become a popular choice for environmentally friendly flooring.  This gigantic “wood-like” grass is very fast growing and requires only five years to grow from seedling to harvest.  The bamboo plant does not die when the stalk is cut and it re-sprouts from the clump.  Humidity levels must be monitored strictly with Bamboo flooring because it grew in a very humid environment and will dry out easily in our climate.  As long as the humidity levels are kept under control the floor will maintain it’s beautiful look.

Linoleum

Marmoleum is the largest environmentally-friendly product name in linoleum.  It is made from natural raw materials, including linseed oil, pin rosin and sawdust and is biodegradable, organic and hygenic.

The anti-microbial properties prevent the growth of many micro-organisms and its natural anti-static properties help to repel dust and dirt, making it easier to clean.  The natural properties cause it to strengthen over time and, upon proper maintenance, it will retain its attractive appearance for many years.  Marmoleum is available in a multitude of styles and colours and has become very fashionable and attractive in the past decade.
